Hanging Out With a Legend

Ocala, Florida:

I've been to the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing a few times now. It's become sort of a pilgrimage when I'm in Ocala for work. I know that Don lives on property, but the off chance of seeing him is rare. The museum offers private tours, but those are typically set up in advance. I happen to be at the right time and right place last week as "Big Daddy" wanted to offer a private tour to a few walk ins. I quickly paid the extra fee and jumped in with a group of about 8 people about 10 minutes into their tour. Having seen Don race as a kid at Englishtown, NJ and growing up around muscle cars and drag racing- it was cool to say the least. We toured three buildings which are normally off limits to the public. Don tells great stories, is open for questions and really a down-to-earth regular guy who loves racing, horsepower and talking the history and people involved in drag racing.

Don points out numerous memories over his storied career.

Don points out another piece of memorabilia.

Don prepares to "cackle" Swamp Rat 12.

Fired up!

Don's hat was blown off firing up this Flathead. He has numerous engines on stands that show the evolution of the internal combustion engine and all can be fired right up.

If you are in the Ocala, Florida area- I highly suggest stopping in to the museum. What you see here is just small glimpse of what is housed at this magnificent museum.
